In 1967 four surgeons were ready to proceed with the world’s first human heart transplant, three Americans had worked together for years to prepare for this but it was an ambitious young South African surgeon, Christiaan Barnard, who eventually won the race and made history.  The First New Heart tells the remarkable story of this race to make medical history.
