We know what people looked like (us!) but to work out what they did and how they lived, archaeologists have to sift for clues among fragments of evidence: a few remarkable cave paintings, flint tools and the bones of the animals they lived among or off.  Now the history of the Stone Age is being rewritten by new discoveries that are emerging not on land but from sea.
