For two months the Hymers family are transported back in time to experience domestic life as it was lived by millions on Britain’s wartime Home Front.
The series begins with a half-hour special charting the background to the project: the painstaking renovation of the house and its garden; the setting up of a wartime shop; the appointment of a ‘War Cabinet’ to oversee the experiment.
The Hymers are transformed into a thoroughly 1939 family. Will they soon be begging for a return to the comforts of the 21st century?
