BBC2 order four-part WW2 series
Hull is to act as the springboard for a BBC documentary series exploring the history of the Blitz.
The 4 x 60-minute series One Bomb - The Hidden Histories Of The Blitz (w/t) will be produced by Wall to Wall for BBC2 in partnership with The Open University.
Using new research, each episode will draw on official incident reports and maps to reveal the butterfly effect of a single bomb from its initial impact through to the wider consequences for modern Britain.
2017 UK City of Culture Hull will be the focus of the first episode as the series proceeds to examine the strategic arguments that raged within Britain about the effectiveness of aerial bombing of civilian populations.
BBC2 channel editor Patrick Holland said: “It promises a unique exploration of the devastation caused by wartime bombing of UK cities, revealing the ways in which Britain was changed, both physically and socially, forever.”
One Bomb - The Hidden Histories Of The Blitz was ordered by head of natural history and specialist factual commissioning Tom McDonald. It will be executive produced by Cate Hall and series produced by Tim Kirby.
Open University senior lecturer in history Dr Chris Williams added: “One Bomb takes the viewer on a journey into the records of war, and shows how much we can learn from the historical record, both about the past, and about the present.”
